Sun care is really about sun protection. Proactive attention to this approach is the best anti-aging skin care measure you could possibly take. Whether you are fourteen or forty.
1. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure, especially between 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., the sun’s peak hours.
2. Make sure to apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and make sure to apply it at least 15 minutes before going outdoors. It should be reapplied every two to three hours and after going swimming or participating in activities where you may sweat excessively. Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outdoors.
3. The so-called "physical blockers" such as zinc and titanium tend to offer the best protection against both UVB and UVA, the forms of solar radiation that damage skin the most. While many people think these types of creams as white and pasty, zinc and titanium can now be found in sunscreens that go on clear.
4. Wear wraparound sunglasses with 100 percent UV protection. Try to stay away from mirrored sunglasses because they intensify the sun’s rays which can ultimately damage your eyes. Be sure your sunglasses have UVA and UVB protections, which should filter at least 80% of the sun's rays.
5. Cover Up - Wear protective clothing and hats when you're out in the sun. Loose-fitting clothing made from tightly woven fabric works best.
6. Seek Shade - Move your beach blanket under an umbrella or go inside, pour yourself a big glass of cool water and take a break from the sun.
7. Protect Your Lips - Lips can never tan, but they easily burn. Wear a protective lip balm every day and reapply it often. Don't lick your lips—the lip balm will wear off faster.
8. Ban the Tan - There's no such thing as a safe tan! Never use tanning beds. If you like the look of a tan, ask your parents about using sunless tanning lotion. It's much safer than a real tan. If you want that rosy glow on your face, dust your face with bronzing powder.
9. Keep check on your skin. If you notice any freckles or moles that grow larger than a pencil eraser or change color or shape, see a dermatologist. Most skin problems can be treated successfully if they are caught early enough.
10. Don't forget to apply sunscreen on your ears!
